Trump warns Republicans they have to win the midterms or ‘he will be impeached’

President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned Republican members of Congress that if they don’t win in this year’s midterm elections, “he will be impeached.”
Trump made the comments during a Republican Party retreat at the Kennedy Center, recently renamed to include Trump’s name by a board full of his appointees.
“We have to win the midterm elections because if we don’t win them, they will just… I mean, they will find a reason to impeach me. I will be impeached,” the president said.
Trump was impeached twice during his first term. In 2019, he was charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress for allegedly pressuring the president of Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 election. The second impeachment came during his final days in office after the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, and lawmakers charged him with incitement of insurrection. Trump was acquitted in the Senate both times.
“I got accused twice for nothing,” Trump argued on Tuesday, the fifth anniversary of the January 6 attack.

With the 2026 election on the horizon, President Trump said he believes Republican policy is better than the Democratic Party’s platform, but acknowledged the obstacles the president’s party typically faces in a midterm cycle.
“They say that when you win the presidency, you lose the midterm elections. So, you are all brilliant people. Most of you have been in this business longer than I have. That makes me smarter than you, because look where I am, right? No, it’s not like that. But I wish you could explain to me what the hell is going on with the public’s mind. Because we have… we have the right policy. They don’t. They have a horrible policy. “They stick together,” Trump said.
“They had the worst president, did the worst job. They had the worst policy. Us I have to Even running against these people. Now, I No say Cancel the elections should Cancel the elections, because the fake news will say, ‘He wants the elections canceled. he is a dictator.’ they always Call me a dictator,” Trump said as he continued to criticize former Democratic presidents.
In his comments, Trump also alluded to the GOP’s slim majority in the House, which now has a two-vote margin after the unexpected death of California Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa and the early retirement of Republican Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene on Monday. Although the president offered full support to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, who was present.
“A lot of times they say, ‘I wish Mike was tougher.’ Tougher? In fact, he’s as tough as anyone in the room. But you can’t be harsh when you have a majority of three. And now, unfortunately, a little less than that. “I mean, a little less than that, maybe,” Trump said.

Trump talks health care, advises GOP to be flexible on abortion restrictions
With health care expected to be a major issue in this year’s election after enhanced subsidies from the Affordable Care Act expired at the end of 2025, Trump continued to criticize the ACA (also known as Obamacare) and advised Republicans to be flexible on abortion restrictions.
Trump reiterated his preference for paying Americans directly so they can purchase their own health care and health insurance.
“Let the money go in a health careful account or whatever you do it. Let the money go directly to the people,” he told lawmakers.
The president then moved on to the Hyde Amendment, a decades-old provision that prohibits federal funds from going toward abortion services.
“Now you have to be a little flexible in Hyde, you know that. You have to be a little flexible. You got to work something. you have I have to use my wits. you have I got to work. We are all big fans of all, but you have “We have to be flexible,” Trump said.
It’s unclear exactly how Trump wants Republicans to be “flexible” on that issue.
