Schimel lost to what could be a margin of two digits, giving the richest man in the world a significant political setback and causing questions about how anxious the Republicans will be to adopt Musk’s participation in future careers, including intermediate periods.
But despite the result of Tuesday, Musk remains unchanged in his political ambitions. According to people familiar with their operation, it still plans to play an important role to help Republicans retain camera control in future careers, including the intermediate works of 2026.
The sources said Musk and his team entered Wisconsin’s career knowing that it would be a uphill battle. Part of the calculation, according to people close to the effort, was that the Democrats in Wisconsin would probably make Musk the face of their attacks independently, so it was better to face them directly and present the case to voters instead of letting those attacks remain unanswered.
Musk’s political team had seen warning signs in the final stretch. A memorandum of one of his groups obtained by ABC News showed that Schimel had been following the liberal candidate Susan Crawford for two digits before in the race and his numbers improved after a wave of negative advertising. But in the days before Tuesday, the Musk team saw the Schimel numbers tank, which led the billionaire to go to a media bombardment that included multiple live transmission events and an interview in Fox News.
Now, the Democrats are working quickly to capitalize on Crawford’s victory and portray Musk as a responsibility for Trump and the Republican party.
The leader of the majority of the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said that Schimel’s loss was a referendum in Musk.
“Wisconsin voters sent a decisive message to Elon Musk, Donald Trump and Dege rejecting an extreme republican for their Supreme Court: our democracy is not on sale,” Schumer wrote in x.
The governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, a billionaire who donated more than $ 1 million to the Wisconsin Democratic Party before the race, wrote in X on Tuesday night: “Elon Musk is not good in this.”
Patrick Guarasci, a political operation with headquarters in Wisconsin that served as the main strategist of the Susan Crawford campaign, echoed that opinion. He said that one of the key conclusions for democrats nationwide is the importance of facing Musk’s political efforts directly.
“We did not go back to a fight when Elon Musk entered this race. We did not go to look for that fight, but we did not go back to her. And I think that is probably one of the lessons learned,” Guarasci told ABC News in an interview on Wednesday.
Even so, Musk’s supporters point out that the billionaire also played a central role in Trump’s presidential victory in 2024, particularly focusing on Pennsylvania with similar tactics.
