Melania Trump says she and Putin communicate about children affected by war

First lady Melania Trump announced Friday that she and Russian President Vladimir Putin have had an “open channel of communication” regarding children affected by the war between Russia and Ukraine.

“We have agreed to cooperate with each other for the benefit of all people involved in this war,” he said in brief remarks delivered from the Grand Foyer of the White House.

“In fact, eight children have been reunited with their families in the last 24 hours,” he added.

The first lady had written a letter to Putin stating it was time to protect children affected by the years-long war, which was personally delivered by President Donald Trump when he met with the Russian leader in Alaska in August.

“He responded in writing, indicating his willingness to engage with me directly and describing details about Ukrainian children residing in Russia,” she said Friday.

Melania Trump said her representative has been working directly with Putin’s team on reunifying children separated from their families as the conflict continues.

“Russia has demonstrated its willingness to reveal objective and detailed information that reflects the current situation,” he said.

The first lady also said she was provided a “detailed report” about the eight children who were rounded up and the facts confirmed by the US government contained in the documents.

“This is an important initiative for me. It is based on shared purpose and lasting impact,” he said, adding that there are plans “underway” to reunify more children in the near future.

“The soul of a child knows no borders or flags,” he said. “We must foster a future for our children that is rich in potential, security and complete with free will. A world where dreams come true instead of being dashed by war.”
