Inflation is decreasing, but these prices are still rising

Inflation cooled after the “release day” of President Donald Trump last month, falling to a minimum of four years and challenging the fears of the price increases promoted by the rate, showed this week’s government data.

Even egg prices, a symbol of the increase in costs, fell around 10% in April compared to the previous month.

Even so, the prices of some products continued to increase, including daily items such as coffee and beef.

It is normal for some prices to increase at a much faster rate than general inflation, said Omar Sharif, founder and president of the Inflation Insights research firm. The impact, he added, depends on the role that such elements play in the finances of a specific person.

“At the end of the day, the important thing is the weight of the price change in your budget,” said Sharif, noting that stubborn price increases for some goods can be compensated with price drops to others.

This is what you should know about what prices are still uploading and what is behind the trend:

Coffee

Coffee prices fired 9.6% in April compared to a year ago, marking inflation four times greater than the general rate. Instant prices of coffee rose even faster, jumping 13.5% during the past year.

The increase in coffee prices is reduced to a supply shortage along with a robust demand, which means that many dollars are chasing after very few coffee beans, said David Ortega, food economist at Michigan State University, ABC News.

Recent droughts in Vietnam and Brazil, two of the world’s largest coffee producers, have restricted world production, said Ortega.

“These price increases are mainly driven by meteorological clashes,” Ortega added.

Meanwhile, coffee drinkers take advantage of few alternatives, resulting in a constant demand for the product.

Beef

An increase in meat prices also comes from a shortage of supplies that dates back to drought conditions, Ortega said.

Ground meat prices fired 10% in April compared to a year ago, while the costs of meat fillets increased 7% during that period, according to government data.

In 2022, a great drought in the beef producing regions of forced cattle shepherds to sell more animals than usual, since drought increased the costs of cattle feeding, which in turn caused the farmers to maintain their herds, Ortega said.

Many of those farmers, he added, sold the necessary cattle to produce future beef supplies.

“The national meat flock is at its lowest level in decades, and the demand is strong,” Ortega said. “When those two things meet, they get this great increase in prices.”

Automobile repairs

Automobile repair prices shot 7.6% in April compared to the previous year, equivalent to inflation three times greater than the general rate.

The trend owes largely to the increase in high -tech cars, equipped with features such as rearview cameras and traffic sensors, which have added costs even to some routine repairs, said Brian Moody, AutoTrader executive editor, ABC News.

The scarcity of workers has exacerbated cost problems for repair companies while reinforcing compensation to attract and retain employees, sending higher prices, Moody added.

“More people want technology in their cars,” said Moody. “That technology requires greater ability to manage and fix, but at the same time, there is a shortage of technicians and workers.”

Men and Women Exterior Clothing

The general prices of clothing fell slightly during the year that ended in April, but some items can still offer a shock of stickers for spring buyers.

The prices of men’s outer clothing, including costumes and sports layers, rose 5.3% during the year that ended in April, which is equivalent to inflation more than double the general rate.

Women’s exterior clothing costs, which include jackets, coats and vests, increased even faster, climbing 6.2%.

Sharif, of Inflation Insights, said that the reason for these price increases is murky since they have coincided with a much more slow increase in costs for men’s outer clothing producers and a direct drop in production costs for women’s outerwear.

The extensive supply of such products means that price increases are probably from the peculiarities in the taste of the consumer, potentially as a result of the prices commanded by the specialized brands, Sharif added.

“Changing trends in demand may be raising prices,” said Sharif.
