At least 15 dead, 18 injured after trams are derailing in Lisbon, says City

At least 15 people are dead and another 18 wounds after a derailed tram in the capital of Portugal on Wednesday, authorities said.
At least five people are in serious condition after the accident in Lisbon, according to the city’s communications department.

It seems that the safety cable on the electric tram broke, which makes the car deraile, the department said, based on preliminary information.
The mayor of Lisbon declared a three -day mourning period.
“I offer my sincere condolences to all the families and friends of the victims. Lisbon is mourning,” said Mayor Carlos Moedas in a statement.
The Office of the Prime Minister of Portugal also declared a national day of mourning for Thursday and said he is in contact with local officials.
The incident remains under investigation.

The tram cabin that was derailed can contain up to 40 people. The famous tram, known as Gloria, is a funicular who travels up and down an steep hill.
“With the sadness that I knew from the derailment of the famous’ elevator gives gloria,” said the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, in a statement. “My condolences to the families of the victims.”
